XII

  "That king who should succeed, might comprehend,

  As he renown and victory would obtain,

  Whene'er his friendly squadrons should defend

  From all barbarians else the Italian reign;

  So, if to damage her he should descend,

  Thinking to bind her with the griding chain,

  — Might comprehend, I say, and read his doom —

  How he beyond these hills should find a tomb."
