1)EL MARXANT DE VENECIA
En el darrer any del sigle XVI, EL MARXANT DE VENECIA fou imprès per primera vegada y publicat en dues edicions diferentes, l'una portava el nom d'un impressor, J. Roberts, l'altra el nom d'un llibrer, Tomàs Heyes. El titol prolixe de la segona edició era aquest:
«La molt exelenta historia del Marxant de Venecia. Ab l'extrema crudeltat que mostrà Shylock, el juheu en contra el susdit Marxant, al volerli tallar una lliura justa de sa carn: y la conquesta de Porcia per la tria de les tres arques.
»Com ha sigut representada diverses voltes pels servidors del lord Chambelan.
»Escrita per William Shakespeare.
»A Londres, impresa per J. R., per Tomàs Heyes y posada en venta al cementir de Paul, el de la senyal del vert Dragó, 1600.»
Desde el mes de juliol del 1598, l'impressor ja havia fet registrar son dret al Stationer's Hall.
EL MARXANT DE VENECIA es la darrera de les obres de Shakespeare nombrades en el catàleg que Francis Meres publicà a la fi del 1598.
2) «Compendré aleshores perque la sang me rajà del nas el darrer dilluns negre». -El cronista Howe conta així l'origen d'aquesta dita singular, Dilluns negre:
«El dia quatre d'abril del 136O, a l'endemà de Pasqua, campà el rei Eduard ab un exèrcit davant de Paris, y feia un fred tant dur, que molts homes moriren gelats dalt de llurs cavalls. Veusaqui perque al dilluns de Pasqua se li ha dat el sobrenom de Dilluns negre»
3) «Tenen a l'Anglaterra una moneda d'or aont hi ha grabada una flgura d'angel». -La pessa d'or ab l'efigie de l'Angel era una moneda correnta en temps d'Elisabeth: s'anomenava Angel y era tant antiga com la monarquia saxona. L'antiquari Verstegan suposa que'l mot English, qui designa la raça inglesa, es una contracció del mot Angel-like, semblant a un angel. Aquesta pretinguda etimologia explicaria perque els primers princeps d'Anglaterra havien fet esculpir la figura d'un angel a la cara de sa més bella moneda.
4) «Sol, la! Hop! Hei! Sol, la! Sol, la!» -Aquí, Lancelot imita el sò de la trompa per medi del qual els correus senyalaven llur propera arribada en temps de Shakespeare.
