9.

Deep in the marble rock, the Hall

Of Death was hollowed out, a chamber wide,

Low-roof’d, and long; on either side,

Each in his own alcove, and on his throne,

The Kings of old were seated: in his hand

Each held the sceptre of command,

From whence, across that scene of endless night,

A carbuncle diffused its everlasting light.
