LIII. Andreas Gryphius

1616-1664. Gryphius is the most important of the pseudo-classic dramatists, though his plays lacked the schooling of the stage. He was born in Glogau, Silesia, won early distinction as a scholar and poet, resided several years in Holland, France, and Italy, and finally settled down in his birthplace, which honored him with the office of town syndic. He wrote five original tragedies in alexandrine verse (always with a chorus of some kind), and several comedies, partly in verse and partly in prose. The selections follow Tittmann’s edition in Deutsche Dichter des 17. Jahrhunderts.
