LXVIII. Christian Fürchtegott Gellert

An eminent fabulist and moralist of Saxon stock (1715-1769). Like Gottsched, he spent the best years of his life in the service of the University of Leipzig. His Fables and Tales (1746-1748) were reprinted in numberless editions, made their publisher rich, and remained for several decades the popular ideal of pleasant and edifying literature. Gellert was also a pioneer (the Swedisch Countess, 1747) in the field of moral family fiction after the manner of Richardson. The Selections follow Kürschner’s Nationalliteratur, Vol. 43.
