XLI. Ulrich von Hutten

1488-1523. An eminent humanist and poet laureate of knightly stock, Hutten had attacked the papacy in various Latin writings before resorting to the vernacular in support of Luther, of whose cause he became, in 1520, an ardent champion. The defeat of his friend Sickingen compelled him to flee to Switzerland, where he died on the island of Ufnau, in the Lake of Zürich.

The selections follow Kürschner’s Nationalliteratur, Vol. 172, pages 249 ff., and pages 269 ff.
