XI. Ezzo’s Lay Of The Miracles Of Christ

A Leich (strophic poem with varying number of verses to the strophe), written, it would seem, in 1064. The dialect is Alemannic. Ezzo was dean of the Bamberg cathedral. The introduction states that Bishop Gunter ordered his clergy to ‘make a good song’; that ‘Ezzo began to write, will found the way (i.e. the meter), and when it was done, all hastened to become monks.’ The poem consists of 420 short lines in riming (assonating) couplets.
