XXII. HEINRICH VON VELDEKE’S ENEID

A Low German poem of 13,528 verses, completed between 1184 and 1190. Its author was a Netherlander of knightly rank who finished his poem in Thuringia and was regarded by his successors as the father of the riming love-romance. 97 His chief source was an Old French Roman d’Enéas, but he dealt very freely with his French text, omitting much, adding much and making some use, possibly, of the Latin original.
